A Legacy for Beverly Schofield Ridgeway and the Women of Gamma Chi-Cal State, Long Beach

Bill and Beverly Ridgeway

By Bill Ridgeway

Bev is a very special person, deeply loved by her family and friends. Her focus on education, dedication to others and kind heart have had a lasting impact on many.

Bev grew up with modest means in Long Beach, California, and attended Long Beach State while living with her parents. Being a member of Delta Gamma allowed her to expand her social circle, make lifelong friends and appreciate college life beyond academics. Bev also gained leadership experience, serving as the president of her chapter in 1965. As an alumna, Delta Gamma afforded Bev the opportunity to maintain friendships and continue to do good. It was especially meaningful when both of our daughters became Delta Gammas: Beri, Epsilon Iota-UC San Diego and Katelyn, Phi-Colorado. And I was proudly named Anchorman in 1965. Our family has always been Delta Gamma true.

In our 55 years, we've had many adventures. As newlyweds in 1969, we spent 80 days in a Volkswagen camper traveling Europe. This amazing experience crystalized the foundation for our partnership and made future travels seem luxurious!

Bev's involvement in Delta Gamma was instrumental in her development, providing support as an undergraduate and also as she earned a master's degree in elementary education, emphasizing in the professional program for reading specialist. Higher education, combined with hard work and sacrifice, provided our family with security.

Delta Gamma is an important organization that makes a lasting positive impact on women. Bev and I believe in paying it forward, and honoring her in this way allows her legacy to live on. The experiences provided by Delta Gamma have been extremely meaningful to our family. While she can no longer volunteer or help others directly, these scholarships will assist Delta Gammas to complete their education, so that they too may do more good in the world.
