Expanding Horizons for Future DGs

Through gifts of stock, Barbara Homola Kilburn, Alpha Tau-Butler, endowed a scholarship that will allow women to take advantage of all the opportunities membership in Delta Gamma provides.

Barbara Homola Kilburn, Alpha Tau-Butler, knows the difference an academic scholarship can make in a student's life. That's why she's endowed a merit-based scholarship with the Delta Gamma Foundation and has funded it through gifts of stock.

As a young woman at Butler, she received an academic scholarship from the University. Without this financial support to help pay her tuition, she wouldn't have had the funds to go through the recruitment process—membership in Delta Gamma may have been out of reach. Barbara is grateful for all that DG offered her as a collegian: "It was instrumental in helping me come out of my shell and try new things. I expanded my horizons and challenged myself in social situations."

After Barbara graduated, she realized the importance of philanthropy and the power of Delta Gamma women as a collective force: "We can do a whole lot more as a whole group." An active member of her alumnae chapter, and a Cable Award recipient, Barbara is committed to supporting causes that are close to her heart: "It is nice to be able to give to groups I believe in, like our local arts council, and I definitely believe in the work of the Delta Gamma Foundation." By making gifts of appreciated stocks held for more than one year, Barbara could increase the impact of her gift, qualify for an income tax charitable deduction and eliminate the tax on the gain.

When asked why she chose to create an endowed scholarship through the Foundation, and not with her University, Barbara noted that her scholarship will be able to help when and where the need is greatest. The Foundation is grateful for Barbara's support, so that countless other young women will be able to take advantage of the opportunities membership in Delta Gamma offers. They'll expand their horizons, "Do Good" through philanthropy and support causes they believe in, just like Barbara.

Gifts of appreciated securities held for more than one year may be eligible for an income tax charitable deduction for the full fair market value of the stock, and eliminate any capital gains tax.
